Who it is for
A Supported Internship is a type of learning programme for young people aged 16 to 24 with SEND or additional needs. It helps you get ready for work if you need some extra support. Most of the time, you will be working at a real business to learn job skills. You will also do some learning with a college or training provider. It is a great way to get experience before starting a paid job. It will help you build independence, confidence and self-esteem, and to support you to move into paid employment.
What the programme includes
Once you start your internship, you will get help from a Job Coach. They will support you while you learn and work.
You will also follow a study plan that may include:
- Qualifications that match your job goals
- Travel Training to help you learn how to get to work using public transport
- English and Maths (as needed)
Structured work placements
We want to help young people in the area learn the skills they need for their future careers. Supported Internships placements could be available in lots of areas like:
- Digital and IT
- Hospitality and catering
- Office work
- Retail (shops)
- Libraries
- Facilities
Ongoing personalised support
Dedicated staff with experience in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) will provide support throughout the programme.
On-site college learning
You will get to will attend education-based sessions with your friends, including:
- Literacy and numeracy as may be required
- Employability skills
- One-to-one tutorials
