Helping Students Prepare for Work Experience Success

Somerset employers tell us that successful work experience is rarely about prior knowledge — it’s about attitude, behaviour and preparation. Enthusiasm, punctuality, clear communication and a willingness to learn consistently stand out as the qualities that make the biggest positive impression.

The way students approach the placement also matters. Some employers ask students to apply formally or write directly to request a placement. Supporting learners to understand what professional communication looks like — whether that’s a short email, letter or application — helps them make a positive first impression. Employers tell us they appreciate communication that is clearly written, well‑structured and shows genuine interest in the opportunity.

Small things can make a big impact. Arriving on time, dressing appropriately, listening carefully and asking questions all help students feel more confident and enable employers to offer a richer experience. Employers also highlight the value of students reflecting on what they’ve learned, the skills they’ve developed and how the experience has shaped their next steps.

National guidance from The Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC) states that meaningful work experience should be underpinned by preparation and reflection, and help students understand employer expectations, recruitment processes and workplace behaviours, in line with Gatsby Benchmark 6.

The CEC’s Modern Work Experience approach provides practical guidance for schools on strengthening preparation, employer engagement and student reflection.
