COVID-19:  Support and resources for employers

How do I know what results young people will get from school and college now that exams are cancelled?
All exam results will be calculated using evidence from work and tests submitted prior to the cancellation of exams. You can find more information about exam results on the GOV.UK website > Employers should place equal value on the results presented by students completing in 2020 as they do to those completing in other years.

How will my graduate recruitment plans be affected?
Universities will be unable to hold face to face recruitment fairs. However, you can still use technology to promote your opportunities to students. You can contact the careers team at universities near you to discuss options.

Will they get their results, or will there be delays?  
Each University will decide on its final year qualification process and will uphold standards for this year’s students.



Can I still work with colleges and training providers?
Yes. All FE Colleges in Somerset are honouring conditional places and are accepting new applications. Training providers are staffed and can take enquiries.

Can I still offer a student placement?
Colleges and training providers will still require placements for students. If COVID 19 has affected your operations then you can discuss any changes with the employer relations team at the college or training provider.

I am no longer able to offer a placement - who do I tell?
If you can no longer host a placement please let the employer engagement team at the college or training provider know as soon as possible.

I have a student working with my company and they are worried about transport.
If the student has a bus pass, they can use this to travel to their placement as well as college. If the student does not have a bus pass or your business is not on the public transport network then please consider if you can support them to attend the placement. For instance, there may be team members who travel a similar route.

I have a young worker who is on placement with me who seems unable to access help for transport.

We now have less staff so I am worried about supervising a new apprentice? Who can I speak to?
If you are concerned about supporting apprentices within your business during the current restrictions, please discuss your options with your provider. For local support, contact Marie Howard at Skill Up Somerset on 07395 796297. 

Skill Up can provide independent support to answer your questions. They are an independent team of specialists who will,

  • listen to your questions to understand what information you require
  • provide an answer based on the Government guidelines
  • offer options where required

I can no longer retain my apprentice but would like to help them with their next step?
If you are making an apprentice redundant speak to your learning provider. You may have contacts in your supply chain who have opportunities for your apprentice to compete.

I was planning on supporting a Traineeship work placement, but I can’t now.
If you can no longer offer a traineeship please speak to your learning provider. You may have contacts in your supply chain who can offer the opportunity.

I had a trainee before the lockdown began, can I continue it once we are off lockdown?
If the Traineeship has been disrupted due to COVID 19 please speak to your training provider about continuation options.

I can no longer retain my trainee. Are there other opportunities for them?
